4 tips for a successful New Year

New year, new you…… Am I right?!

As the holiday season comes to an end, we reflect on what has happened in the last year. What did we accomplish? What worked? What didn’t? What would we change? From this, we build a set of new years resolutions with hopes that they will be more successful than last year.

As part of our naturopathic training, we learn to help patients create SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound. This allows us to see success in what we are trying to accomplish. With that in mind, here are some tips to redefine common new years resolutions and help you start 2019 off with a bang!

1. Rather than join a gym, opt for living an active lifestyle:

Being active and exercising does not always have to involve the classic treadmill, running and weight lifting at the gym. Try new ways of incorporating 20 minutes of exercise into your day (it does not have to be all at once!)

  • Take the stairs at work

  • Get off the subway or bus a few stops early and walk

  • Do a quick at home workout such as the 7-minute workout (you can't tell me you don’t have 7 minutes!)

  • Take a walk after dinner with your family or roommate. This not only helps you digest your food, but also increases spending time with others.

2. Become more confident with a daily mantra:

Confidence is intoxicating; and increasing your confidence can be helpful to you in many aspects of your life. My favourite way to increase confidence is through the use of mantras. Grab a post-it note and write a mantra that feels right to you, there is no wrong way to do this! For example, “I am confident, I am strong, I am beautiful”. Repeat this every morning when you wake up and learn to truly believe it.

3. Rather than sticking to a new diet plan, opt for increasing fruits and vegetables:

Spend the new year learning healthy food alternatives and changing how you eat without having to be restrictive. Make healthy eating a lifestyle and not a fad. Increasing the good stuff is a great starting point. Have a look here at how you should portion your fruits and veg on your plate at each meal.

4. Save money, take time for yourself and stay healthy all in one by taking advantage of your health insurance coverage:

Ok, this is your push to book that appointment! No one likes to waste free money and most health insurance coverage covers a wide spread of different practitioners including naturopathic medicine. So book that massage, get a new pair of glasses, and/or go see your naturopath!

And of course, if you don't believe in new years resolutions, simply vow to evolve instead.
